Wenhe Summer Camp

Last week, HandsOn Shanghai in partnership with volunteers from CSR, Standard Chartered Bank, and East China Normal student volunteers organized a 3 days summer camp for 30 Wenhe school students.

In a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, students participated in a series of science, art, sport, and health classes.  The science class brought children basic ideas about solar energy, constellation, air with interesting experiments. Art workshop awakened children’s joy in creative expression of different art form. Sports class brought children interesting sports games. Health & sanitation class brought students some healthy life customs and adolescent sex education.

In the second day, 21 student volunteers and 30 migrant children were separated into 5 groups and competed against each other in an orienteering game that tested their physical, mental, and team building skills to overcome (as wounded soldiers) as series of tests. An enjoyable time for many that helped build bonds between students and volunteers, while teaching valuable lessons of teamwork, camaraderie, and service to others in need.

Through this weekend activity, both the children and volunteers not only for the knowledge they leaned through the activities, but gained new friends!
