Shanghai Downs Society
The Project:
Benefiting Organization:
Shanghai Downs Society
Objective:
The project aims to improve early intervention skills, educate DS parents and raise social recognition and acceptance of DS children.
Why is the project necessary?
Shanghai Downs Society, the first of its kind in China, was composed on voluntary basis of parents of children with Down Syndrome. Founded earlier this year (2009), the society is still in the shaping stage: seeking effective ways to improve its operational mechanism and enhance its social footprint.
Shanghai, though leading among others in China in its social welfare system and care of the disadvantaged, is appallingly poor in its understanding of Down Syndrome and DS people.
We aim to become advocate for the value, acceptance and inclusion of People with Down Syndrome in Shanghai. We wish that we could find a way both socially and economically viable, to help cultivate social awareness and give continuous support to DS people and families . If successful, we wish to replicate our model in other major provinces of China.
