2011 Make A Difference Day Programs

Children’s Hospital Coloring Book Program

Program Overview: Developed as a way to reduce boredom, and provide new activities to the children receiving treatments in the hospitals, volunteers will expand visit Shanghai’s three children’s hospitals and kick off HandsOn Shanghai’s new coloring book delivery program. It is a program that extends beyond our traditional programming as children who are not well enough to leave bed, but are in need of support, can be reached.

Activities: During this event, volunteers will deliver coloring books to all residents within Shanghai’s three children’s hospitals, will pass out (and give presentations on) basic hygiene and home safety, as well as executed simple performances (juggling, art, music)

Sunshine Home Outing

Program Overview: Within each of Shanghai’s street committees existing a Sunshine Home that provides educational and fun activities for mentally and physically challenged team. Intelligent, outgoing, and a lot of fun, HandsOn has regular programs with 3 homes now, and through the Make a Difference Day will expand our partnerships to include all the Minhang District’s Sunshine homes.

Activities: On May 26 and 27, groups of 250 volunteers and 250 sunshine home students will visit the Shanghai zoo in a day of fun, companionship, and learning.

Elderly Flower Box Delivery Program

Program Overview: As part of our ongoing effort to support the elderly in Shanghai, volunteers will deliver over 500 flower boxes to 20 elderly care centers (25 boxes per center) in the Minhang district and spend time socializing with the elderly in the facilities

Activities: Beginning on May 26, and finishing on May 28, teams of student and corporate volunteers will build, paint, and plant 500 flower boxes to be delivered on May 28. The on May 28, groups of 20 volunteers will deliver boxes to 2 facilities , and spending 45 minutes to 1 hour at each facility playing games and socializing with residents

Kindergarten Painting Program

Program Overview: Continuing with our long engagement in education, and the belief that through simple infrastructure improvements significant improvements in the environment for education can be made, HandsOn volunteers will paint 10 kindergartens during the 2011 Make a Difference Day.

Activities: Held over the course of two days (1st day base coat / 2nd day design), teams of 20-25 volunteers will work together to paint kindergarten classrooms and libraryies . On some sites small libraries will also be designed and installed.

Environmental Education Awareness Program

Program Overview: In an effort to raise awareness and appreciation of nature and environment amongst migrant kids and HOS volunteers, the HandsOn Environmental education program will be launched during the Make a Difference Day. A creative outlet for students, it will be a program that engages students inside the classroom through simple lectures, excited them through activities, and extends from the school to the home as lessons are shared with families.

Activities: Once on site, volunteers will work with teachers to teach fun and educational one hour environmental lesson to 30-45 students, and then will work with students to build a design a flower box that will be taken home

Elderly Home Visitation and Cleaning Program

Program Overview: With 23% of Shanghai’s residents over the age of 60, supporting the elderly is an issue that is becoming very important as more and more elderly are living on their own, and as part of our 2011 partnership with the Minhang district HandsOn Shanghai will be kicking off a new program to support those elderly who are living on their own but are having difficulty (financially, socially, and physically).

Activities: During this event, volunteers will visit the homes of 2-3 elderly residents to removal trash, clean kitchen, clean the bathrooms, assist in removal of old appliances/ large items, install safety tape in bathroom shower to prevent slipping, and assess if further safety equipment needs to be installed

Build the HandsOn Urban Garden

Program Overview: As part of a new environmental program to promote urban gardens and environmental awareness within our surrounding communities, HandsOn Shanghai will turn its 400m2 entry into a living garden

Activities: A multiday event (3-4 days), volunteers from the community, local universities, and corporations will work to remove existing vegetation, build raised garden boxes, re-soil, and then plant the garden. It will be a project that is truly hands on!

Volunteer Awareness Program

Program Overview:On May 28, with the official launch of the HandsOn Shanghai Minhang Volunteer Center, 500 volunteers will hit the streets to promote volunteerism, community engagement, and the new volunteer training center.

Activities: As part of this event, volunteers will visit residential, commercial, university and retail areas to pass out flyers, develop excitement and interest in volunteering, and promote the HandsOn website.
